The Making of a Masterpiece: The Great Beefsteak Raid Phase 1

We are excited to announce the release of the sixth print in Mort’s “Tribute to the Legend” Series. Once again, Mort has found a subject that had never before been painted, featuring one of the most dramatic and underpublicized raids of the war. Confederate forces were besieged in Petersburg, Virginia and were suffering shortages of food supplies. Aware that his men were suffering from hunger, Gen. Wade Hampton decided on a very daring, dangerous raid. He stole an entire herd of nearly 2,500 head of cattle from the Union Army!

This is Mort’s final charcoal sketch on trace. Note the grid lines Mort drew to enable
him to easily transfer the sketch to canvas.

Mort has started to draw up the painting on to canvas.
