After suffering the defeat at Gettysburg in July of 1863,General R.E. Lee began the painful retreat back intoVirginia. Prior to crossing the Shenandoah River nearFront Royal, local merchant William M. Buck extendedan invitation to Lee and his staff to share refreshments athis nearby estate, Bel Air. The good general accepted thisoffer and was entertained by the Bucks’ daughters playingthe piano and singing. Before departing, General Leetook a moment to give his signature to the two youngladies who had gifted him with song.
